Introducing our blogs…

Our blog post Individual effort in combatting climate change dives into the conversation around individual action in combatting climate change through the Coastal Conservation Alliance, we hope that fostering a community around sustainability and collective individual action will promote youth to take more transformative actions in other aspects of their lives through advocacy and spreading awareness. By having discussions around making sustainable choices in our homes and broader communities, we are aiming to empower youth to take on efforts to urge for government action and corporate responsibility. While it is important to acknowledge the large role corporations and government bodies should play in protecting our planet, it is arguably equally as important to acknowledge the power we have as individuals to pressure these large emitters. To do so, we need to be well informed on not only our personal footprints and the footprints of larger emitters, but also the ways in which we can go about organizing collective action within our communities. We support this but equipping our high school youth out reachers with the tools and a platform to practice community organization and outreach within their schools by recruiting fellow student volunteers for our beach clean up efforts.

It is furthermore important to acknowledge the privilege we hold in high energy consuming “developed” countries. We explore these topics by discussing energy as a human right and differing energy landscapes across the world. While low income countries struggle to balance economic development with clean energy advancement, individuals in high income countries must make emissions reduction efforts to offset emissions in low income countries to improve their livelihoods through economic development which may partly rely on fossil fuels. Acknowledging this privilege includes urging our governments, less constrained by a lack of economic resources, to make meaningful changes to environmental and climate related policies that hold large corporations accountable. Holding a space for these conversations on our blog and among our youth volunteers creates an opportunity to spread awareness on the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation on developing countries who disproportionally carry the burden of our changing climate.
